<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Final preparations are underway for this year's Habitat for Humanity expedition to Zambia - our most ambitious project to date. This afternoon, the <a href="http://scchabitat.blogspot.ie/2012/07/zambia-june-2013.html" target="_blank">St. Columba's College Habitat for Humanity Team</a> will jet off to Lusaka to begin their two week house building project. Led by Mr. Ronan Swift, the team, comprising of twenty pupils (forms Forms IV and V) and five staff in all, will work hard over the coming weeks on a number of houses in the Ndola region of northern Zambia. Preparations for the trip have been underway for the past 12 months, with an incredibly wide range of fundraising activities organised. These included barbecues, garden parties, coffee mornings, car washes, quiz nights, comedy nights, raffles, no uniform days and music concerts. Many of the team donated all their earnings from working part time to HFH. The team are also incredible grateful to the numerous people and organisations which donated to our cause, including the St. Columba's College Parents Association. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Everyone has contributed to a grand total of €76,000 so far. This also means that the pupils, staff and wider St. Columba's College community have raised nearly €300,000 for Habitat for Humanity since 2005, money which has provided homes to families in Hungary, Ireland and now Zambia. For this we can all be immensely proud.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Stay tuned to the <a href="http://stcolumbas.ie/" target="_blank">College website</a> for news of our HFH team's adventures in Zambia. As one can imagine, internet access will not be available to the team while on their build meaning that this blog will not be updated live. However, we do hope to post date updates and photos on their return. We wish the team safe travel and every success.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Fundraising for this year’s ‘Habitat for Humanity’ house
building project is well under way. The twenty pupils and five staff travelling
to Zambia next June need to fund-raise an ambitious €75,000 and are coming up
with some imaginative ways to reach their personal target. Some of the
fundraising activities this term have included: making and selling Christmas
cards; a garden opening; a jumbo bake sale; coffee mornings; busking; selling
traditional Kenyan trousers; a “mufti” day (no uniform day); a gala dinner
& auction; a comedy night; selling candy canes and a car wash. We are also
very grateful for a huge number of personal and corporate donations to the
cause. A particular note to team members
Arthur Moffit, who raised nearly €3000 at a recently held garden opening,
Charlotte Cooper, who raised over €1000 at a comedy night, Sadhbh Sheeran, who
raised over €2500 at a coffee morning and to John & Sam Clarke who
fundraised over €8000 recently by organising a gala dinner and auction. To date
the team have reached just over €23,000 altogether.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Of course, there is still a long way to go but we are
confident we can reach our target. More fundraising activities are planned for
the holiday period and for next term, including an ambitious 300 kilometre
cycle from St. Columba’s in Dublin to our name sake in Donegal. Stay tuned to

<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are delighted to announce details of <a href="http://stcolumbas.ie/" target="_blank">St. Columba's</a> new Habitat for Humanity project. In June 2013, 20 pupils and 6 staff will travel to northern Zambia for two weeks, helping to build new homes with the worldwide charity. The picture above is of rugby legend, Brent Pope during his recent trip to Zambia with HFH back in June. After four extremely successful trips with HFH to Hungary, we felt it was time for an even bigger challenge and Zambia seemed like the perfect project for our highly motivated pupils. The team will need to collectively raise close to €80,000 and the team are already busy fundraising during their summer break. Individuals can now make donations online using our new <a href="http://www.mycharity.ie/event/scchabitat" target="_blank">MyCharity webpage</a> (<a href="http://www.mycharity.ie/event/scchabitat">www.mycharity.ie/event/scchabitat</a>) or participate in our various fundraising activities throughout the next 10 months - stay tuned to the blog to find out more. Below are the names of the pupils travelling to Zambia next June!</div>

It truly was a wonderful and memorable trip and we are lucky to have amassed a huge selection of photographs of our adventures. So we decided to put them to music and present them in a video. I hope you enjoy. (The first song, by the way, is from <a href="http://www.myspace.com/ronanswift">Ronan Swift</a> - one of our team members).</div><br />

Again divided between Site A & Site B, the teams got through a mountain of work. On Site A, the team were busy cutting chipboard to completely cover the outer structure of the extension, screwing said chipboard to the frame (using hundreds of screws - hence the "screwing around"!), painting doors, treating wood and even raised the roof - literally by 5 more cm after the architect decided it needed a slightly larger pitch. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Sandoor, our regular Site Supervisor, decided to give the rest of us a chance to lead the team - rotating the role every half hour. There were varying styles of leadership from Mr. Jones's "Simon Says" policy (which included an impromptu "Hokey Cokey" - well, Simon said!), Mr. Jackson's request that everyone speak in a Scottish accent and Zac Stephenson's "just keep doing what you're doing" style of leadership! Great fun was had on site but some excellent work too. It was particularly satisfying to see the outer frame covered which gave us a sense of the future shape of the extension.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">On Site B, Levi entertained the troops while guiding them to further progress on the pathway. Team B enjoyed an extended lunch with traditional paprika sausage and treats from Levi but again were hugely productive, extending the pathway by another few metres.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Both teams were reunited for a brief time on Site A and got a chance to pick up some of the wonderful gift items the residents at the Symbiosis Centre make in the workshops. In the evening the team watched some young kids rehearse some traditional Hungarian dancing before our Farewell Dinner up on Symbiosis' hillside centre. After our wonderful BBQ, Sandor and Levi each spoke about the work we had done, Mr. Jones thanked the two site supervisors for their excellent work in supporting and guiding us. He spoke about how each and every member of the team had grown and matured in the last 11 days and that this was down to the wonderful working atmosphere created by the two site supervisors. The evening drew to a close with individual pupil awards accompanied by "alternative" team photos!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Our final day on site summed up the trip wonderfully - fun, productive and emotional. Many many thanks must go to Sandor and Levi for the tremendous work that they do for Habitat for Humanity Hungary. We feel privileged to have spent the last week or so with them and hope to see them again in the future. Here are some pictures from our last day on site.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

The principal Ildiko Kovacsne Szegedi welcomed us and then handed us over to teacher Istvan Berecz who paired us off with their pupils for an entertaining cultural exchange lesson. Hugo Hollis was especially enthusiastic about this and he appeared much more animated than usual.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Later on, a group of their pupils performed a quirky English language play about a bunch of useless first-time bank robbers who ended up trying to hold up a library. They also sang a variety of English and Hungarian songs for our entertainment. We were particularly impressed by a small boy who turned out to be an incredible human beatbox. We tried to match them with a Kezia-led rendition of ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ and Zach and Mark’s take on that enduring classic ‘The Soup Song’. At the very end of the session, relations between Hungary and Ireland were cemented forever with the joint rendition of ‘Hokey Cokey’. The Hungarian pupils were sad to see us go as it meant they wouldn’t miss Maths.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">In the afternoon, all twenty of us were together on the city site. Some of us sanded doors, some of us planed them, some varnished planks and some stripped paint off doorways. Mr Jones multitasked, hammering rafters into the framework of the new room we have been constructing, making fun of Jamie and Catie’s efforts in the same field and chirping his catchphrase, ‘We’re Doin’ It!’ at least fifty times. Neil was also very efficient, assisting Gaffer Jackson and providing a free life-coaching service to the sometimes beleaguered Levi.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Having the full twenty on site gave the afternoon a great sense of camaraderie and we ended the working day playing cricket/baseball with a broom and a rolled up work glove. <br />

Please, don't ask us to explain but Philip has been the source of many a joke, entertaining quip and motivational speech during our first week in Miskolc. He has been busy, managing to mix business (mainly supervisory) with pleasure during the previous eight days. Yet he has maintained his dignity, sense of humour and general monkeyness at all times. Philip's owner, Jamie "Drill Bit" Boyd maintains "<i>A monkey is for life, not just for Hungary</i>". Thank you Philip the Crotch Monkey, thank you! Here are a couple of snaps (originating from the iPhone of "Zac Attack") of our furry crotch dwelling friend!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Team B (now very much jumbled up and resembling nothing of the original) were given a tour of the lower farm, partially to see the wood work and brick making workshops, but chiefly to burgle (guess who's writing this one?) back our tools from the local workers! When work began, the group were broken into smaller teams. The "smallest" team consisted of Hamish and Neil (The Hamster & Nails) who continued the laying of the kerb stones (the two have been honing their skills in following a plumb line over the week and are quite accomplished at this task). The ever present cement mixer was in constant use with everyone taking mixing, barrowing & skimming in turns. The teachers ended up with the most menial task of using a selection of brooms to sweep out the dusty covered walkway. The coffee break was longer than expected on Site B when Kez naively asked Levi about his previous career moves. The stories flowed like the tea!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Site A were focused on the erection of the roof rafters, each needing to be cut to size and wedges chiselled to perfection to allow for a snug fit. The rafters were then nailed in place and bracketed securely. There were a few rogue nails along the way, which simply refused to follow the straight line path expected of them. A few expletives were heard and the angle grinder was called for on a few occasions (once to stir the tea). Other tasks on Site A included the never ending sanding and paint removal from some of the centre's old doors. However, many found this task both challenging and relaxing.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Both teams were rewarded with a slightly shorter working day due to the overtime hours worked on Monday. Tomorrow morning the pupils and teachers will visit a local secondary school before a later start on site at 10am. Everyone will be working on Site A tomorrow. All for now - off for supper soon (some of the team are lucky enough to be heading to the cave baths this evening) where surely plenty more potential uses for angle grinders will be explored!<br />

On Site A, the small team there constructed the outer frame of the extension and put it in place. This was a significant moment as the once empty space finally began to look like a "room". On Site B, work continued on the astonishing wheelchair accessible pathway, foundations were dug for the wall extension (which at times resembled a muddy grave) while all day echoed through the trees the high pitched motivational wail "You're Doin' It!!!!!".</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Yesterday evening the team all met to share their own personal experiences of the trip so far and to consider our high and low points. It was universally agreed that opportunities to share one's experiences in this regard help everyone focus on the task at hand and provide the team a platform for reflection on how fortunate we ourselves are. As part of the process, on Hungary's National Day of Poetry, several Haikus were written which summed up a multitude of the team's shared experiences. Tomorrow night the team will compete in a table quiz!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />

Eger is home to a wonderful 15th century castle while Szilvásvarad is full of gorgeous walks and historical attractions - including a fantastic cave where the remains of our Neanderthal ancestors were found. Enough said, here are some photos of the day trip.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

The teams were mixed up today, with the majority working on the hill site where construction of the wheelchair accessible pathway continued. Only six worked in the city site, continuing the preparation of the wood and erection of the supporting frames for the new extension. Joining Team A today was Lindsay, an American lady living in Budapest who volunteered with Habitat for the day. Site B also had a visitor, Jock the Bounty Hunter, pictured below with Levi, our site supervisor. Of course it's Mr. Jackson, who styled his beard like Levi's to raise funds for Symbiosis Centre.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">After work the team went bowling where Aoise Keogan Nooshabadi showed the kids how to do it and Mr. Swift ruled the teacher's alley. There was even time for a few games of pool, air hockey and table football, where Sandoor (the Habitat Co-ordinator) and Catie McGonagle proved (almost) unbeatable. Eleanor Dolphin & Mr. Jones ran them closest, defeating them once before crashing out in the replay.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Tomorrow the team take a well deserved day off work (to rest aching muscles and unwind). We travel to Eger, a city best known for its castle, thermal baths, historic buildings (including the northernmost Turkish minaret), and red and white wines.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

It was another highly productive day. In the city site, Team A fully dissembled the old structure where the extension is being built, carefully removing the roof, the struts, supporting beams and finally the vertical poles. Jamie Boyd describes the activity on site A.</div><blockquote><div style="text-align: justify;">"Today on the city site, the main job was to dissemble the temporary roof of the old terrace, with help from 'Phillip the Crotch Monkey', which was keeping the concrete we had set yesterday dry overnight. We completed this task quite quickly and afterwards came the tedious job of pulling nails out of the wood we had taken down. Meanwhile the girls on site were painstakingly planing and sanding the planks of wood which will be used to construct the new extension. After lunch we began building a permanent roof for the massage and physiotherapy room and the girls managed to gain a few admirers from the residents in the home. A productive and enjoyable day on site A."</div></blockquote><div style="text-align: justify;">Team B were also extremely busy today completing a series of tasks in the hill site including mixing and pouring concrete and laying kerb stones for the new wheelchair accessible pathway, transporting rubble swept down during the recent flood. They also got to see two newly born kids in the goat farm.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">It was an extremely eventful day for one of our team members as Claire Conway appeared on Hungarian television with the director of the Symbiosis centre speaking about Habitat for Humanity, volunteering and the work of St. Columba's. She did us so proud, speaking elequently, clearly and with passion. She was a great ambassador for St. Columba's College and Habitat for Humanity Ireland. Well done Claire.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

Instead we were treated to a full tour of the Symbiosis Farm (Symbiosis is the organisation with whom Habitat are working) to see their goats, donkey, horses and vegetable garden. Afterwards we rescheduled our visit to Miskolc's famous thermal Cave Baths (just a short walk from our hotel) and spent a leisurely couple of hours soaking in the hot mineral waters - curing any lingering aches or pains from yesterday mammoth work session.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">However, sunshine greeted us in the late morning and the city site was deemed safe enough to work in during the afternoon. We all agreed that we should work late, hoping to make up time lost in the morning. With all the team now situated in the city site we ploughed through a mountain of work. We were broken into four groups: one working on mixing concrete to finish the floor of the extension; one transporting the concrete; one restoring a damaged door in the centre and the other planing and sanding the wood for the extension frame. By the end of the day, the floor was completed, the wood sanded and the door near complete. The sun also came out to celebrate our day's great achievements.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">We are shortly heading for dinner in Miskolc's city centre, following by our very own House Singing competition - not to be out done by the Columban's left at home. We arrived on site at 8:00am, met by Levi and Sandoor, to begin our site safety orientation. Levi had everyone carefully listening as he outlined the necessary precautions which needed to be taken by everyone during the build. After the site safety orientation, we all received a tour of the affiliate, a centre for children and adults with serious mental and physical disabilities. The centre has two sites in Miskolc, a restored school in the city centre and a purpose built centre outside the town, where they also run a small farm. There are permanent residents in both centres but they also cater for day visitors, providing facilities for over 100 disabled people from the area. The centre allows it's residents and visitors to explore their creative skills and have a series of workshops aimed at providing a stimulating environment as well as raising funds for its day to day running costs. We were treated to a tour and display by the residents of the various workshops (paper, wood, fabric & gifts - which includes candles and decorative goods) as well as some of the residents rooms. It was clear to everyone that the work of the centre in providing care and stimulation for its residents was excellent.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">After the tour, the team were split neatly into Team A &Team B (Mark Agar did suggest the teams should be given numbers - he suggested W for one of the teams). Team A (which stood for awesome) remained at the city centre site, removing the frames from a foundation of a new room being constructed in the centre (which will be a massage room for the residents) and preparing the concrete floor. Team B (which stood for brilliant) were transported to the newly built centre outside of town, to build a new wheelchair accessible pathway to replace one destroyed by a flood over the winter. Both teams worked extremely hard in ideal conditions (a balmy 24C) and deserved a wonderful meal in an Irish Bar & Restaurant of all places!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The two teams elected in remain the same tomorrow in order to finish the work started today. The teams will be mixed up throughout the build. That's all for now. Keep following <a href="http://twitter.com/scchabitat">our Twitter feed</a> for more banter from the site, including Mr. Jameson's Miskolc Fact of the Day! Here are some pics, mainly of Team A (because Team B forgot to use their cameras - they were working that hard!).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

We were all delighted with our express tour of the wonderful city of Budapest and to the warm welcome we received from Sandoor and Levi when we arrived at the affiliate in Miskolc. Below are a few photos from our adventures in Hungary's capital. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

That trip was immensely successful but, considering the difficulties experienced with fundraising in 2009, we decided to take a break last year.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">It is now March 2011 and we are returning to Hungary in a few days time (we are currently making the final preparations) to work on a build in the town of Miskolc in north eastern Hungary. This time around we will be helping to build and restore a centre for children with physical and mental disabilities. Over the past six months or so we have been fundraising heavily to secure the funds to build and restore the centre with a range of activities from table quizzes, magic shows, ice-cream and cake sales, non-uniform days, coffee mornings, sponsored walks, Christmas pudding sales (thanks Marie!), comedy nights and much more. We are also grateful for the many personal donations made to staff and pupils to help up reach our target of €35,000.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">With the hard work over we can look forward to a busy, productive yet fulfilling trip. We will be blogging and, for the first time, <a href="http://twitter.com/scchabitat">tweeting</a> throughout the trip (our twitter account is <a href="http://twitter.com/scchabitat">@scchabitat</a>) so keep up to date with what's happening right here.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">So who's going? Well there are six staff (Humphrey Jones, Peter Jackson, Julie O'Herlihy (Robinson), Kate Smtih, Ronan Swift & Evan Jameson) and 14 pupils (Emma Moore, Aoise Keogan Nooshabadi, Claire Conway, Alex Traill, Alex Bowring, Kezia Wright, Eleanor Dolphin, Catie McGonagle, Mark Agar, Zach Stephenson, Jamie Boyd, Hamish Law, Neil Dalrymple & Hugo Hollis). We are sure the trip will be a hige success and would like to thank each and every one who contributed in any way to our fundraising efforts.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">We've climbed the mountain, now let's enjoy the view.</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726334168528203927noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1365938071874628104.post-83296753491654452662009-04-06T19:29:00.004+00:002009-04-27T18:23:16.210+00:00Home, sweet home.<div align="justify">So the bus journey is over. It arrived late and we were joined by the bus driver's wife and another couple of their friends, but we got to the airport so all good!</div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">We made it through another 'all you can eat' meal, despite being so late, nearly everyone left a few pounds heavier than they entered. We also enjoyed Mr. Clarke's birthday, four months too late, but thanks to Noel and Robbie none the less, the cake was delicious!</div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">We spent a lot of money in the covered market in Budapest, but everyone got good value for money.</div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">We made it to the airport and we got back to Ireland safe and sound. A busy day and nothing to be sneezed at!</div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">But one of the most impressive feats was not of our manufacture. What is most impressive is the effect that the trip has had on most of us in the group. I can only speak for myself but I know that I have learned a lot about both myself and others over the past few days. </div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">For now I, along with all the other members of the team, wish to thank you all for your generous support over the past fewe months. Please rest assured that you have helped us make a difference in the world!</div>The Pupilshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12680848665808433572noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1365938071874628104.post-885649865095845402009-04-06T19:14:00.005+00:002011-02-12T11:46:00.293+00:00Day 10 - That's all folks! or is it?<div align="justify"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdpXjO6dxZI/AAAAAAAAARQ/t3Gx6xhAhsA/s1600-h/IMGP1313.JPG" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321662172502017426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdpXjO6dxZI/AAAAAAAAARQ/t3Gx6xhAhsA/s200/IMGP1313.JPG" style="float: right; height: 150px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; width: 200px;" /></a>We come to our last day of our trip! Our last day of work was hot and fulfilling to see the last of the plaster boarding finally finished. We also found time to make the sign Michael and Piggy are holding. It was also sad to know that this was our last day and that our work was 'finished' and that we wouldn’t be coming back.<br />
<br />
We left the site and began packing in preparation for Mr. Clarke's judging of the TIDIEST ROOM which both of today’s writers won.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdpXjliGJBI/AAAAAAAAARg/aPVd5qx-v2Q/s1600-h/IMGP1322.JPG" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321662178573820946" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdpXjliGJBI/AAAAAAAAARg/aPVd5qx-v2Q/s200/IMGP1322.JPG" style="float: right; height: 150px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; width: 200px;" /></a>We left for the final dinner with the families who we were the houses for. During this we were given a crash course in Hungarian folk dancing which you can see in the photo. We sat down to a very tasty three course meal and chatted with the families. Fergus was burned when the waiter accidentally poured Goulash on his back which many are convinced was the hand of God revenging his lack of work during the past few days! There was a disco next door which we joined and even got Clarkey dancing!<br />

On the way to the site we looked up and saw a stork’s nest on the very top of a telephone pole. The nest was perfectly balanced and a real example of how stable a building should be.<br />
<br />
We arrived at the site and immediately set off to our intense but enjoyable jobs, which included plastering walls for the third day in a row and screwing Styrofoam to the exterior of the house. It was easy to see that a minority of the team were suffering from lack of sleep.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdUiqXgIghI/AAAAAAAAAQ4/PHz_poZ_RGs/s1600-h/IMGP1291.JPG" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320196646066749970" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdUiqXgIghI/AAAAAAAAAQ4/PHz_poZ_RGs/s200/IMGP1291.JPG" style="float: left; height: 150px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 0px; width: 200px;" /></a>The second half of the working day featured a race between two teams on either side of the house, racing to see who could finish screwing Styrofoam to the exterior of the house. Progress was easy to see as it was a very quick and basic job, which just required cutting pieces of Styrofoam to certain measurements and then just putting them into place and screwing them in.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdUiqT0aqFI/AAAAAAAAAQw/WYmYK0NUUlo/s1600-h/IMGP1307.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320196645078083666" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdUiqT0aqFI/AAAAAAAAAQw/WYmYK0NUUlo/s200/IMGP1307.JPG" style="float: left; height: 150px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 0px; width: 200px;" /></a>The day ended with a small talk on the day’s progress and then a quick retreat back to the hotel, where team members could relax in the thermal baths or walk to the shop to stock up on food. We had supper which was a weird looking Hungarian pizza and then back to the rooms to have a long team meeting, which examined how the trip has affected us on various levels.<br />

The boys had been talking in whispers of the possible tricks they might want to play on some of us. I remembered the fact that it was the 1st of April (April Fools day) when I saw Ms Hanna with her face painted like a cat. Mrs Heffernan put on fake nails with the characters from high school musical printed on them. For the rest of the time working almost everyone was in high spirits, and it was a fun day.<br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdPMrfeXZVI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/OXygBW5qdlY/s1600-h/IMG_2921.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319820632409990482" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdPMrfeXZVI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/OXygBW5qdlY/s200/IMG_2921.JPG" border="0" /></a>Today was a half day on site as it was our second R’n’R day. We arrived on site to find the gate locked and Pisti and Sandor were nowhere to be seen. The teachers pretended that it was an April Fools and told us that they had only got us out of bed as a prank! When we started leaving they quickly explained that it wasn’t a prank and that Pisti and Sandor were not there yet. Some of the lads then went looking for them and found them around the corner hiding in their car and van! Immediately we realised we had been pranked and after having a laugh decided we wanted a lift back to the site. So 9 of us climbed into Sandor’s Suzuki Swift (Only slightly bigger then a mini!) and two into the open back of Pisti’s pick up truck and we made our way back to the site. The teachers and others quickly turned around again when they saw Sandor and Pisti driving 11 of us back to the site. The half day of work then went quite fast as Sean, Michael, Fergus, Robbie and I hid all over the site avoiding teachers as they went.<br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdPMrme7g_I/AAAAAAAAAQg/6rdF5GIKic8/s1600-h/DSC00673.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319820634291405810" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdPMrme7g_I/AAAAAAAAAQg/6rdF5GIKic8/s200/DSC00673.JPG" border="0" /></a>After our half day of work we headed into the 2nd largest town in Hungary for a bit of R’n’R. The trip was good fun as we went up into the tower of a huge church and had the chance to see views over all of Debrecen. Later on we visited a museum which contained lots of old historical Hungarian objects which seemed to send off an alarm every time you went within a meter of them.<br /><br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdPMrTYQQAI/AAAAAAAAAQY/eveTEdb9dzU/s1600-h/IMG_2929.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319820629163130882" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdPMrTYQQAI/AAAAAAAAAQY/eveTEdb9dzU/s200/IMG_2929.JPG" border="0" /></a>Later on the same Sean, Michael, Fergus, Robbie and I had a brainwave and we got a picture of Pisti (The GOD of our trip) printed. Judith is a real hero for us, a truly generous and compassionate individual who we will never forget!<br /><br />As for the title, in Hungary 'Hello' is used both as hello and goodbye...</div>The Pupilshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12680848665808433572noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1365938071874628104.post-33971718174578334712009-03-31T19:51:00.008+00:002009-04-01T09:37:39.482+00:00Day 7 - Taking the Pisti?<div align="justify"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdKHpSfpHaI/AAAAAAAAAP4/Nz-9cSS4wvo/s1600-h/BILD0448.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319463253286919586" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdKHpSfpHaI/AAAAAAAAAP4/Nz-9cSS4wvo/s200/BILD0448.JPG" /></a>Today we continued building. The Few that were unlucky enough to get plaster boarding were close to shooting themselves in the head with the staple gun. Blocking was much the same as other days; basically it was a place where you could doss without the hassle of Pisti. The lads found a way of amusing themselves by hanging from the beams on the ceiling but the almighty Fergus destroyed all in every competition. (Note from the editor: Self praise is no praise, Fergus!)<br /><br />Pisti<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdKHoocHcgI/AAAAAAAAAPo/ezqzQW6NzIM/s1600-h/IMG_2893.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319463241997840898" border="0" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdKHoocHcgI/AAAAAAAAAPo/ezqzQW6NzIM/s200/IMG_2893.JPG" /></a>You may have seen Pisti in previous blogs. Let me explain how this one local man has become our God amongst the team. He has been famous for having godlike skills and godlike goulash. (Which we have yet to taste, and have been told contains the limbs of local malcontents, who Pisti slaughters in his sleep) Pisti is basically the Chuck Norris of Hungary and the jokes concerning him are becoming more and more outrageous as the days pass. His accent has been attempted by many around the site but only one can truly master it. The habitat families are loosing hundreds of euro per hour due to the help of Fergus and Seán guessing the measurements of the plasterboard. But with one swift call of the godlike name he appears from the plaster with the phrase ‘You want goulash?’ Our goal is to get a signed picture of him holding a bowl of goulash.<br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdKHplLb3EI/AAAAAAAAAQA/Tv-YWDWnPaQ/s1600-h/BILD0453.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319463258302438466" border="0" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdKHplLb3EI/AAAAAAAAAQA/Tv-YWDWnPaQ/s200/BILD0453.JPG" /></a>This evening we went to the house of one of the families we are building for. Some of us believed that it was going to be very uncomfortable, but after 15 minutes we were playing Lego and enjoying ourselves. The house had only three rooms, the kitchen, bedroom and sitting room. They had no running water in the house, an outside toilet and the two children shared a bed in one room. They had all the necessary things needed to sustain life but none of the luxuries that we have come to expect in life.<br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdKHpBD25KI/AAAAAAAAAPw/xzNE-3fFZ6c/s1600-h/IMG_2885.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319463248606979234" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdKHpBD25KI/AAAAAAAAAPw/xzNE-3fFZ6c/s200/IMG_2885.JPG" /></a>Quote of the day:<br /><br />Jack: Is this ok? Some of us were dry walling, which nobody liked to do, but we did none the less, and the others were putting supports in the roof. Sean, Burney and Fergus had finished dry walling a wall but when Pisti saw it he was not impressed, and told them to take it all down. Later in the day he wittily thanked them for changing jobs!<br /><br />For lunch we had a taashty dish of spiced chicken and rice, with lots of clean plates. As we went back to the site we counted squashed frogs on the roads, and reached a total of seventy two, in just the short walk!<br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdEWNT3F_5I/AAAAAAAAAPI/eAW-YuJOU6k/s1600-h/IMGP1259.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319057052826730386" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BQBP5RD_zh0/SdEWNT3F_5I/AAAAAAAAAPI/eAW-YuJOU6k/s200/IMGP1259.JPG" border="0" /></a>Towards the end of the day people started to grow tired, and the work slowed down. Tonight for dinner, after a swim, there was another taashty dish of spaghetti bolognaise. At the moment, our tour guide from the other night and from the local school is here playing cards with some of us, and I’m sure it will be an early night after they leave!<br /><br />Quote of the day<br /><br />Dalton: ‘‘I have at least eighteen thousand Pistis in my pocket!’’ (Pisti is our hero of a building supervisor!)<br /><br />By Robbie and Steffan</div>The Pupilshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12680848665808433572noreply@blogger.com0
